AF 1.0 Students write verbal expressions and sentences as algebraic expressions and equations; they evaluate algebraic expressions, solve simple linear equations, and graph and interpret their results:

AF 1.1 Key Standard. Write and solve one-step linear equations in one variable.

AF 2.2 Key Standard - Demonstrate an understanding that rate is a measure of one quantity per unit value of another quantity.

Classroom Activities - Understanding Rational Numbers and Proportions - In this grades 5-8 lesson, students use real-world models to develop an understanding of fractions, decimals, unit rates, proportions, and problem solving.

AF 2.3 Solve problems involving rates, average speed, distance, and time.

Distance-Time Graphs. Create a graph of a runner's position versus time and watch the runner run a 40-yard dash based on the graph you made. Notice the connection between the slope of the line and the velocity of the runner. Add a second runner (a second graph) and connect real-world meaning to the intersection of two graphs. Aw Chute! - Downloadable lesson plan from PBS.org Mathline. After designing and constructing parachutes, students use the distance formula to determine the rate of descent and with this information look for similarities in design.

Going NoWhere Fast- Math TV Video word problems. Students must solve a swimming pool problem fill and draining problem that involves work, rate and time. Onscreen audio and visual help is provided in setting up the problem and solving it. Once the problem is solved, students are given another problem to solve and can make use of the practice video, a scratch pad and calculator.

AF 3.0 Students investigate geometric patterns and describe them algebraically:

AF 3.1 Use variables in expressions describing geometric quantities (e.g., P = 2w + 2l, A =?2 bh, C = ? d—the formulas for the perimeter of a rectangle, the area of a triangle, and the circumference of a circle, respectively).

Measurement: Circumference & Diameter of a Circle - Register for free downloads of VOD for an excellent teacher training video from Annenberg Media/PBS that looks at perimeter/diameter and diagonal ratios and teaches the relationship between the perimeter of a shape and the diameter of a shape. Students look at the ratio of many different objects and collect data. They develop an awareness that circumference divided by diameter is always a constant ratio. 12 additional videos provide in-depth look at measurement and cover area, volume, measurement relationships, etc. Classroom case study videos are also provided for the middle school teacher.

Annenberg/PBS Video Library: Building Rafts with Rods - Real classroom video where NCTM math standards guide the lessons. Click on Video #6. Here, groups of students learn about patterns, functions, and problem-solving as they calculate the surface area and volume of various-sized rafts, then graph their data.
