6th Grade Measurement and Geometry
Note: the type of resource is bolded in the descriptive text.
MG 1.0 Students deepen their understanding of the measurement of plane and solid shapes and use this understanding to solve problems:
Area and Circumference - Figure This! Math Challenge #15: Big Trees. Students use measurements of the girth, or circumference, of a tree to see which tree is large enough that a car could be driven through it. This crazy but fun idea allows students to visualize and work with the areas and circumferences of circles.
Circle Geometry - Math Playground Word Problem with video. Find the area of a circle that a puppy has ruined to determine how much it will cost to reseed the lawn. Onscreen audio and visual help is provided in setting up the problem and solving it. Once the problem is solved, students are given another problem to solve and can make use of the practice video, a scratch pad and calculator.
Circumference of a Circle - Lesson 10.3 McDougal Littell Interactive Instructor. Shockwave interactive tutor with auditory support explains the computations for determining the circumference of a circle and offers practice problems. Students may pause and replay the screens and check their answers.
Circumference and area - using online manipulatives, students resize a circle and compare its radius, circumference and area. Explore Learning gizmo is a subscription service but users are allowed five minutes of free usage for any gizmo.
Volume of a pyramid - Learn/practice/play tutorial from aaaknow.com.
Exploring Diameter and Circumference of Circles - Junior High Math Interactives video tutorial (Learn). Students investigate the relationship between diameter and circumference of a circle. An interactive activity allows further exploration. Print activities are also provided.
Understanding pi: Comparing ratios using a spreadsheet - Students explore the number ? in the context of similar shapes by using a spreadsheet to record and compare the distance around shapes (perimeter/ circumference) to the distance across those shapes (width/diameter). From NEIRTEC Mission Algebra Project.
Comparison of Volumes of Similar Solids - Gain an understanding of this area of mathematics with online tutorials and practice exercises.
Interactivate Lesson Plan - Ideas & activities designed to introduce students to surface area and volume.
Purple Prisms: Linking Length, Perimeter, Area, and Volume
This Internet Mathematics Excursion is based on NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. This is the fourth in a sequence of lessons designed for students to understand scale factor and volume of various rectangular prisms.
Volume of Prisms - BrainPop video for fee
Geometry Online - On these pages you will find activities for middle or high school geometry. Bookmark this page and check back often.
Interactive Geometry Crossword - This interactive geometry crossword provides immediate feedback and scoring. Great for 6th grade review of terminology.
Part of the Math in a Cultural Context series, Building a Fish Rack helps sixth graders solve open-ended problems and complete problem-solving projects relating to two-dimensional shapes.

NCTM Illuminations- How Many Triangles Can You Construct? - These investigations in geometry begins with an open-ended question that challenges students to become actively involved in mathematical experiments, ideas, discussions, manipulative materials, tools, and techniques
Investigating the Concept of Triangle and the Properties of Polygons: Making Triangles - This two-part example describes activities that use interactive geoboards to help students identify simple geometric shapes, describe their properties, and develop spatial sense.
Math Cove - Provides an excellent tutorial for students to review angles, triangles, and the Pythagorean theorem. This site contains applets that teachers can use in their geometry classrooms as well as information for teachers on how to create their own applets to use or put on a Web page.
