The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has developed educational technology standards, known as NETS (for Students, Teachers and Administrators, respectively) that are used widely throughout the state and country. These new standards, updated in 2007, 2008, and 2009, focus on 21st century skills to improve teaching and learning.

danah boyd, a Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society, conducts research that “…examines social media, youth practices, tensions between public and private, social network sites, and other intersections between technology and society.”

iKeepSafe has developed a rich tool, Generation Safe, devoted to fostering good Digital Citizenship and building positive culture change. Currently in Beta, this resource offers a 360 Self Assessment tool that leads to certification, an Incident Response tool that standardizes responses and provides a detailed “how to” process, as well as professional development. Dr. Justin Patchin, from the Cyberbullying Research Center, is providing excellent information and resources for students, parents, and educators at:
Project Tomorrow sponsors the national Speak Up survey (formerly the Net Day Survey) which provides data on the digital world collected annually from teachers, administrators, students, parents, and now, pre-service teachers. Robyn Treyvaud is a renowned leader in the Digital Citizenship arena in Australia and has listed her favorite bookmarks at the Digicitizen web site: Of particular interest is a short video which deals with sexting in schools. This powerful tool, titled “Megan’s Story”, can easily be shared and discussed at a staff meeting:

To demonstrate the power in the voice of today’s youth, two Canadian schools organized this Anti-Bullying Flash Mob, January 2011 in honor of Ant-Bullying Day.

Copyright Kids is a fun, interactive web site that includes basic information on copyrights, useful links, a copyright quiz and information on how to register a copyright, from the Copyright Society of the USA. (Grades 5-12)

The Digicitizen web site has a Student Voice section that shares resources created by other students.

Privacy and Reputation Online is a video that reminds students that we all have an online reputation and we need to be aware of both the positive and negative outcomes of our online reputation (Grades 9-12).  This video may not be appropriate for all students, and should be previewed by parents first.

Yahoo Safely: Teens is a web site in which teens can access a wealth of current information.

Common Sense Media is now more than just a media rating guide for parents.   Parents may browse important topics by grade level or subject area, as well as access “Essential Advice for Managing Media”.

iKeepSafe has a Parent Resource Center and activities for children that can be shared in a “Family Fun” environment.

Let’s Fight it Together may not be appropriate for students of all ages, and should be reviewed by parents first.  This video shows what can happen when bullying goes online.

Net Cetera is a wonderful resource created by the US Government and can be used as the starting point of many conversations in the home around the proper use of today’s media.  Available in English and Spanish, this resource will not be reprinted after June 2011.

BrainPOP (4-12) and BrainPOP Jr. (K-3) offer some free classroom resources on Digital Etiquette and Internet Safety. Every year, during the month of September, all Digital Citizenship/Internet Safety resources are free, including those normally requiring a subscription

 

Common Sense Media, originally a media guide for parents, now houses comprehensive, free K-8 curriculum that teaches students to be “Responsible, Respectful, and Safe Digital Citizens”.
Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that enables users to legally share and reuse copyrighted images by allowing the creator to assign a license, with or without restrictions, to his/her works.  In many cases, image attribution is all that is required, so this site is a valuable tool for students and also teachers who want to model ethical behaviors for their students.
Temple University’s Media Education Lab, led by Renee Hobbs, has developed valuable resources that explain copyright and fair use in today’s media centric world.

Copyright and Fair Use Resources

The use of media in the 21st century classroom is becoming more and more prevalent and important, however, are we using copyrighted materials in legal and ethical ways?  The recording and film industries recount numerous stories of illegal downloading and peer to peer file sharing by students, so clearly there is need for more instruction for students.   But as teachers, do we really understand Copyright and Fair Use, and has our district established clear guidelines?

Section 107 of the Copyright Act allows for fair use of copyrighted materials.  Yet what this means exactly is confusing to students, teachers, school districts, and even lawyers.  Teachers ask, “Can I use a part of this video in a lesson?” or “Can my students use an entire song in a presentation?”  The answer may vary according to whom you ask.  Sometimes, the teacher may be given Hall Davidson’s Copyright and Fair Use Guide for Teachers (http://www.halldavidson.net/copyright_chart.pdf), or the teacher may be asked to follow adopted practices aligned to Temple University’s Media Education Lab (http://mediaeducationlab.com/).  Both can be good resources to end the Copyright and Fair Use confusion, and are a great starting point to help districts formalize and communicate their Fair Use policies.

Creative Commons

A great resource for finding licensed images and other media is www.creativecommons.org.   This site allows creators to upload their images, music or videos and license their works that can then be legally modified or adapted for use by others.  Teachers and students can use Creative Commons to search sites like Google and flickr to find these licensed works.  The licensing restrictions are noted, however, in most cases, all the creator asks in exchange is for attribution by citing the URL.  This website helps students understand the legal issues of copyright and enables them to use media legally and ethically.
